European Protein will present the latest results from experiments with their fermented protein source for cattle on NutriFair. Visitors will also be able to meet Biochem and Biofiber-Damino, both of which present feed supplements for calves.

Fermented rapeseed and seaweed have already shown good results in pigs. The alternative protein supplement from European Protein increases feed utilization and stabilizes digestion in both sows and piglets. The result is weaning of piglets without the use of zinc and with less antibiotics.

Pilot experiments with the fermented proteins for dairy cattle show a good effect on both the cows' milk production and cell numbers.

“We are pleased that at NutriFair we can present the preliminary results of our experiments with fermented protein sources for cattle. We can see that the feed helps to increase the productivity and health of the cows. The feed is now being tested in several commercial herds, where we are also working to determine the beneficial effect of the feed on the climate footprint, ”says feed expert and Nutrition Development Director, Pia Sørensen.

At the upcoming NutriFair trade fair in Fredericia 17.-18. May 2022, several companies will present alternative feed solutions for cattle, including Biofiber-Damino, Biochem and European Protein. All three companies will be at the fair.

Great preliminary results

At ProteinFair, European Protein will unveil several of the results of feeding fermented seaweed to cows and pigs. The supplementary feed for cattle from European Protein is very similar to that for pigs and consists of fermented non-GMO rapeseed meal and seaweed, which is fermented with lactic acid bacteria.

Results from the pilot experiments show that the somatic cell count has been reduced by 42 percent for multiple calves and 32 percent for first-time calves fed fermented rapeseed and seaweed.

The milk producer could achieve a better settlement for the milk because the cell number was reduced on average, Pia Sørensen explains.

“The supplement improves the ability to absorb nutrients and makes the intestinal flora diverse. These are the effects that have had such a great impact on the success of pig production, and it is expected to be the same, which now shows good results in multi-belly animals as well, ”she says.

Nutrition Development Director Pia Sørensen and Project Manager Rikke Matthiesen from European Protein will give a presentation on the Store Stage at NutriFair on Wednesday 18 May 2022 at 13.30- 14.00.

Dietary supplements for both humans and dairy cattle

Feed intake, health and performance are also in focus at Biochem, which at this year's NutriFair, together with Chr. Hansen, brings feed solutions for calves and cattle.

“We can offer both pre- and probiotic products, for example TechnoYeast and BioPlus YC from Chr. Hansen. You can, among other things. use in starter feed for calves and in milk replacer. There is the same basic idea behind our products for young animals when it comes to pre- and probiotics, regardless of animal group. It is about early feed intake, healthy animals and getting more out of less, whether we are talking about prebiotics, probiotics, minerals or other of our products, ”explains Biochem's Technical Sales Manager in Scandinavia Brian Larsen.

In addition, cattle farmers can look forward to being introduced to a new product on the Danish market. Biofiber-Damino launches their colostrum ColoDan Feed, which visitors can taste for themselves:

“We are ready with good advice on the use of the product and at the same time hand out free samples. As we produce the same product as a dietary supplement for humans, we hope that we will be able to attract the visitors' attention when we hold our event, where you will be able to taste the cow's colostrum, ”says Sussi Thomasen, product manager at Biofiber-Damino.

Both Biofiber-Damino and Biochem distribute their products through resellers. Therefore, they are both looking forward to NutriFair, where they are ready to advise the farmer directly.

"We try to address ourselves broadly, so we look forward to meeting both the pig producer, the milk producer and the poultry producer, as well as the entire commodity industry," says Brian Larsen.
