Salfarm with news at NutriFair 2024: Two shots of iron for piglets optimize feed turnover and growth rate

Piglets benefit greatly from iron supplementation, this is known knowledge. But with a double supplement of iron, the growth rate increases, gastrointestinal health improves and feed conversion is optimized - research results show. The company presents their iron supplement to farmers at NutriFair 2024.

Salfarm had no doubts when the results came from the University of Kentucky. This knowledge had to be spread to the farmer, and it had to be at NutriFair in January 2024.

"We would like to have a chat with the farmer about the importance of iron supplements for piglets. We have our specialists on the stand who can advise and guide, and who are very interested in hearing what the challenges are on the farms, how we can get around it and how we can achieve a healthy pig in the barn." says Head of Marketing at Salfarm, Heidi Bjørn.

Research results from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, USA, show improved feed utilization, growth and well-being in pigs receiving two shots of iron of 1 ml 200mg/ml. Earlier this year, the manufacturer Pharmacosmos tested their iron supplement Uniferon, which is sold by Danish Salfarm.

"NutriFair is a good and well-exposed fair, which does a lot to attract an audience. And then it is at a very good time of the year, when the farmer has the opportunity to take a few days away from the farm," explains Heidi Bjørn.

The iron supplement is sold directly to the farmer and does not have to be prescribed by veterinarians.

Increased growth rate and improved gut health

The effect of Uniferon has always been documented, but now it can be documented that the allocation of twice 200mg of iron not only keeps the piglet free from anaemia, but also improves production parameters such as growth and feed utilization.

"The trial shows several beneficial effects in pig production. So when you have a higher yield and an improved health of the pig, the farmer will be able to experience an effect of this on his bottom line. Of course, the effects will differ from farm to farm, but the results show that the pigs' potential could not be fully utilized without sufficient iron – even if the health, management, facilities and genetics are otherwise in order,” says Heidi Bjørn.

Uniferon is an over-the-counter product of pure iron, rather than a combination product, of which there are several on the market. Uniferon is in a 20 percent solution, which has the advantage that each piglet only needs to be injected with 1 ml at a time. It is both easier and without discomfort for the piglet to have such a small volume injected, writes Salfarm on its website.

You can meet Salfarm at NutriFair 17 and 18 January 2024 in Messe C in Fredericia. Tickets are free and can be picked up at Nutrifair.dk.
